Pandemic and Epidemic Threat Analysis Lab
Led by Dr Charles Whittaker, the Pandemic and Epidemic Threat Analysis Lab (PETAL) at UC Berkeley is an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to reducing pandemic risks by turning cutting-edge computational science into actionable public-health guidance. PLOT My Science partnered with PETAL to design and launch a compelling lab website. We successfully communicated the lab’s unique culture and research scope, significantly optimizing their digital presence.

PETAL identity, research, and impact
PETAL leverages computational epidemiology to strengthen pandemic preparedness and outbreak response. We created original illustrations to translate the multilayers approach used by PETAL to inform public health and policymakers in three main study areas: Viral epidemiology, Pandemic Preparedness, and Outbreak Response.

We designed custom illustrations to visually communicate PETAL’s research and the Principal Investigator’s unique vision. The PI approaches this critical work not to alarm, but to emphasize resilience and togetherness—the core strengths needed to overcome major public health challenges. This philosophy is reflected in the lab’s core color: Green Teal, a deep blue-green hue that evokes calmness, trust, growth, and renewal.
